Barcodes

The Barcode Story: In June 1998, Judith received her official UPC barcode designation from the Uniform Code Council, Inc. She is identfied as a manufacturer of one-of-a-kind art objects.  Her number, 663662 is unique and is used on every one of her barcodes. Following those first six numbers, she uses the next five slots for sequentially numbering her works. The last (12th) digit is a check-sum number calculated by the software that geneerates the bars. So, for example, Judith’s 14-foot painting of her seminal barcode (Zero, Zero, Zero, Zero, One) is numbered 663662000018, with the “8” at the end avalable for use by a scanner to check the accuracy of its read.

Many of Judith’s newer works are “signed” with an archival sticker printed with her barcode. Judith’s use of her barcode for a “signature”  can be plainly seen in Conefield  663662000018, and in Crop Test.
